Costs

Telecare is as an effective service which is there to help you whenever it is needed.

The cost for telecare services depends on a number of different things. Whether you live in your own home or in rented accommodation may impact costs. In your area you may find that telecare is means tested but that it is free of charge for those who receive welfare benefits. Also the telecare package you install may have a bearing on costs.

Some people prefer to purchase telecare equipment privately without involving the local authority or their GP and therefore decide to pay for their own telecare costs in full.

As telecare is a flexible service, you are likely to be offered a choice of service options which may have different costs and these usually increase with the number of services you choose.

The package which includes a base unit, a personal alarm and round the clock monitoring is usually the first telecare service to be recommended. However you may also decide to have additional sensors at this stage which will detect bogus callers, floods, carbon monoxide emissions or help detect falls. You may also be offered an emergency response service where your monitoring organisation may send help to you if you fall over in the home.

Before you decide on the types of services you need, it may be helpful to discuss the full range of services available from your chosen provider and the scale of charges. You may be offered the chance to see the telecare service at work before you commit and may have the option to pay annually or monthly by direct debit.
